Hannah and Shawn making a heart with their hands

Our Ohio Farm

I have called Texas home since the 90s, so nobody saw Ohio coming. Least of all me.

When I met Shawn, he was living on a farm in Ohio and I had my house in Texas. Neither of us wanted to give up the place we loved, so we did the reasonable thing and kept both. Now we go back and forth, with our two doodles, Maizy and Georgie, along for the ride. We call the farm our northern retreat.

The land

The farm is 40 acres, with crops in the fields and turkey and deer wandering through like they own the place. It is where I get my outdoorsy edge. There is nothing like this much open space to make you put your phone down and go find your boots.

The house

The house went up in the 1970s, and it has the bones and the quirks to prove it. Shawn and I are renovating it together, and we started from the ground up with all new floors. Now comes my favorite part: the decorating.

The vision

I want it to feel like a hunting lodge that a modern cottage moved into. That means warm colors, furniture you actually want to sit on, and walls full of things with a story. I am on the hunt for farm paintings, deer paintings, and the occasional piece of taxidermy, and yes, I have opinions about all of them.

Follow along

I will share the rooms as they come together here in the Journal, along with what worked, what did not, and where I found everything. You can see the pieces I have been collecting on my Cabin Queen Bedroom, Cabin Twin Bedroom, Cabin Primary Bedroom, and Cabin Dining shelves.

Texas will always be home. The farm is where I go to remember why I love it there too.

See you out there,
Hannah
